The 2016 NFL season hasn't exactly gotten off to the smoothest of starts.
Television ratings have been down and two of the reasons given by detractors has been that the modern game is now too over-officiated and that the crackdown on every form of celebration is just sapping all the fun from games.
Michael Crabtree felt the full force of this on Sunday as the Oakland Raiders wide receiver was handed what has to go down as one of the worst penalties of the year after a touchdown.
After hauling in a short touchdown reception from quarterback Derek Carr, Crabtree proceeded to flip the ball into the air and look at the crowd. For some reason, he was flagged. You can check it out here...
Yep. That was a flag. The fact that Crabtree touched his shoulder - or whatever that was - and received a penalty for it is insane. If that's a throat slash then the official really needs to go to Specsavers.
This comes a week after Vernon Davis was flagged for being the 30,000th player in league history to hit a faux jump shot after a TD.
Something needs to change. If not, more fans could turn off.
