Millwall boss Kenny Jackett was left with mixed feelings after seeing his side pipped by Scunthorpe in the top-of-the-table clash in League One.
Jackett was disappointed to see his side play second fiddle to the leaders for over an hour, but delighted by the way they then fought back and almost snatched a point.
"You just can't afford to give a team like Scunthorpe a 3-0 lead in the way that we did," Jackett said.
"To be fair to Scunthorpe they deserved that lead because they played some great football. But I'm proud of my players for the way in which they got themselves back into the game.
"That showed great character and in the end we just ran out of time as we looked for an equaliser."
Scunthorpe manager Nigel Adkins said: "For the opening hour we played some delightful stuff.
"We try to play some entertaining football and I think in the first half we certainly did. We led 3-0 and it could have been more if we had taken our chances.
"Credit to Millwall, they're a good side, they have been on a good run and they came fighting back. But credit to my players, they had to show a bit of character to close the game out.
"Of course it's nice to be sitting on top of the table at this stage of the season, but we can`t afford to look any further than the next game which for us is a tough one at Oldham."
