When you look ahead to the Royal Rumble pay-per-view every year, usually the excitement is towards which lucky star will outlast 29 others and book their ticket to the WrestleMania main event.
However, the interest in January’s event has taken a huge turn in an entirely different direction, with the prospect of a fantasy match driving fans crazy over the past month.
Fans have always wanted to see Shawn Michaels take on AJ Styles inside of a WWE ring, and it’s never looked likely because nobody thought The Phenomenal One would ever be a WWE superstar.

That’s all changed now, and Styles has started to tease the fans even more by posting a great mock-up picture of himself facing The Heart Break Kid, raising questions into the genuine possibility of the two facing off.
Although he’s retired from in-ring competition, there’s a slight glimmer of hope that HBK will return for one night in San Antonio, Texas as the Royal Rumble returns to the Alamodome, and WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross believes you can’t entirely rule out the possibility.

Writing on his blog, he posted: “The odds of Shawn Michaels wrestling at the Royal Rumble vs. AJ Styles is a definite long shot as HBK has stressed to me on multiple occasions, including the Ross Report podcast, that he’s done with in-ring activities in the wrestling biz.
“However, Shawn is a ‘company man’ and if WWE really needed a main event that could move a large amount of tickets in San Antonio at the Alamo Dome, I think HBK would consider the company’s request.
“Without question, a Michaels vs. Styles match in San Antonio at the Royal Rumble would be coveted by all involved if it were to occur. I’d realistically put the odds of this main event happening at less than 50-50, but I’d love to be wrong on this one.”
THE HEARTBREAK KID VS. THE PHENOMENAL ONE
A lot of fans will be hoping that he’s wrong on this one, but it still seems highly unlikely that Michaels would come out of retirement and potentially damage his legacy.
Not many stars can claim they had two incredible matches with The Undertaker at WrestleMania and were able to bow out on a high.
Granted, the spectacle itself would be incredible as Styles has always been seen as one of the very few that could match the in-ring capabilities of Michaels.
But with a championship around his waist and taking Shawn’s situation into account, the WWE probably won’t want Michaels to lose in San Antonio, and fans won’t want Styles to drop the title beforehand.
The again, if Michaels does have the itch for one more match, there isn’t a better opponent out there.
