Manchester United needed a big win against their local rivals on Wednesday night to banish the demons of the heavy defeat to Chelsea just a few days previously.
It might not have been quite the scoreline many would have hoped to see after Pep Guardiola announced his weakened starting XI for the game, but the result was still a positive one for those wearing red at Old Trafford.
Juan Mata's second-half strike was the only goal but the home side were in the driving seat for most of the match and Manchester City didn't muster a single shot on target over the course of the 90 minutes.
Much of that control was down to Michael Carrick's inclusion, as he kept Man United's midfield ticking over nicely in only his fourth appearance of the season.
Various former players and pundits have been calling for Carrick to get more game time and his performance on Wednesday certainly strengthened his claims to retain his place in the starting XI.
But arguably his highlight of the derby victory came late in the second half when he engaged in a foot race with Sergio Aguero.
The nifty Argentine has seven years on Carrick but as the video below shows, the United midfielder has still got a bit of pace to burn in those legs yet.
Despite initially getting away from the Englishman to burst down the right wing, Aguero was caught up by the 35-year-old and eventually fouled his opponent after slipping.
It's even more impressive when you consider Aguero had only been on the pitch for 20 or so minutes while Carrick had started the game and was still going strong with just a few minutes remaining.
Well, of course, Twitter reacted in quite epic fashion and trolled the Man City forward, here are some of the best tweets:
