Following the Argentine striker’s brace against West Brom at the weekend, Shearer said live on Match of the Day: “He’s the one genuine world-class player we have in our Premier League and he’s the best centre-forward.”
However, just a few days on from that controversial comment and Shearer, it seems, is on the verge of an unexpected change of heart.
The Premier League’s all-time top scorer caught the Champions League action on Tuesday evening and two players, in particular, caught his eye.
Both ply their trade in England’s top flight, with Manchester City and Arsenal, and few would argue that they don’t belong in the world-class bracket after last night’s performances.
Shearer: Two more PL players might be world class
Shearer tweeted: “Good to see @DeBruyneKev and @MesutOzil1088 trying to stake a claim to break into my world-class category 😂 #UCL”.
De Bruyne was superb v Barcelona
Kevin De Bruyne scored a superb free-kick in City’s 3-1 win over Barcelona and was a constant thorn in the Catalan giants’ side until he was subbed off for Nolito in the 89th minute.
Ozil shines v Ludogorets
Mesut Ozil, meanwhile, scored arguably the best goal of the night against Ludogorets.
The Gunners’ playmaker left three players on the ground - including the Ludogorets goalkeeper - before slotting home the winner with just three minutes left on the clock.
That Ozil’s goal completed a magnificent turnaround - Arsenal were 2-0 down, but came back to win 3-2 - made it all the more special.
