Martin Skrtel may no longer be a Liverpool player, but it is clear that he still holds the Anfield club close to his heart.

Now turning out for Fenerbahce, the Slovakian defender played his part in the Turkish side's impressive 2-1 win over Manchester United in the Europa League on Thursday night.

And, taking to social media the morning after the famous win, the man who left Liverpool in the summer ensured his cult status amongst fans on Merseyside by referencing his past with United's fierce rivals in his latest Instagram post.

Having been outplayed at Old Trafford just two weeks ago, Fenerbahce turned the tables on United last night with an impressive performance that included stunning strikes from Moussa Sow and Jeremian Lens.

And, whilst Skrtel was keen to celebrate a win that gives the Turkish side a huge boost as they look to qualify from Group A, he couldn't help but admit that getting the three points against the red half of Manchester was an added bonus.

The 31-year-old centre-back spent eight years at Liverpool between 2008-2016, making over 300 appearances in the process.

You don't spend that long plying your trade at Anfield without coming to understand the fierce rivalry the club has with United.

Cult status

His message is sure to go down well with the fans who used to chant his name, too.

Although he was allowed to leave by Jurgen Klopp over the summer after an inconsistent 2015/16 campaign, Skrtel left with his reputation intact amongst fans.

He even penned a special message to supporters soon after agreeing his move to Fenerbahce.

"I would like to say big thanks to all Liverpool fans around the world for the support they been showing to me and my family throughout 8 and half years," he wrote at the time.

"It was (a) pleasure and privilege (to) represent such a massive club as LIVERPOOL FC. The club, city and fans will be in our hearts forever."

Manchester United v Liverpool - Premier League

Clearly, that message wasn't just for PR purposes - the Slovakian really does seem to retain a love for the Merseyside club.

Part of that love is, of course, a deep disdain for the club he helped to plunge even deeper into turmoil on Thursday evening.
