When Manchester United signed Memphis Depay for £25 million last summer, the Red Devils thought they were getting a future superstar.

The Dutchman arrived as a 21-year-old and had already scored 50 goals for PSV in 124 appearances - including 22 in 30 Eredivisie games the season before his move to Old Trafford.

However, the forward struggled in his debut season under Louis van Gaal scoring just twice in 29 league appearances as United finished fifth.

Depay would have been hoping that a new manager meant a new start for the Red Devils.

However, it seems that Depay is set for another season of struggles at the Theatre of Dreams with Jose Mourinho seemingly not a massive fan of his talents.

He has made just one start this season, in the EFL Cup against Northampton, and was left at home during their 2-1 loss to Fenerbahce on Thursday.

But he may not have to endure another season with the winter transfer window coming up. That latest snub was the final straw for Depay who has now accepted that he has no future at the club and wants to leave.

That’s according to the Daily Mail who claim he is set to leave United in January, just 17 months after arriving.

The report claims that Depay could be the first out of the door at the club during this winter transfer window, starting an exodus as Mourinho looks to make wholesale changes to his stuttering side.

If Mourinho does sell Depay in January, it will mean the Portuguese boss has certainly changed his tune since the summer.

Mourinho on Depay

When he first arrived at the club, Mourinho said of Depay: “I see a good boy, a good kid, a good professional. I don’t care what people think.

“Of course I want him to be part of my squad.

“Last season was last season and I don’t want to go into that too much but I know the players I’ve watched.

“At the World Cup he was a very young kid and that was two years ago.

“I know the player and I watched him many times at PSV and having that player in mind, I want to keep him.

“I want to try everything and the way he is working is so good that for sure, we all believe that is possible.”

But it’s unlikely that Depay will be the only player leaving the club in the coming transfer windows.

According to The Telegraph, the likes of Matteo Darmian, Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo, Morgan Schneiderlin, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Ashley Young and Michael Carrick will all leave the club between now and next summer.

As for Depay, it’s been a pretty disastrous season-and-a-half for him in Manchester but, being just 22-years-old, there is still plenty of time for him to get his career back on track and fulfil his massive potential.
