Steven Gerrard's time as a Los Angeles Galaxy player may well be coming to an end after the Major League Soccer side were booted out of the playoffs this weekend, but that doesn't mean the former England captain will be making a sensational return to Liverpool just yet.
Gerrard, who's contract with the Galaxy expires at the end of the current MLS season in December, has been increasingly linked with a return to his hometown club in a coaching capacity.
However, that idea might have to be put on the back-burner after a report from ESPN claimed that the 36-year-old isn't planning on hanging up his boots just yet.
According to ESPNFC, sources close to Gerrard have revealed that the veteran midfielder is strongly considering continuing playing before his current Galaxy contract.
At this stage, there is no indication exactly where the Liverpool icon would consider playing, with staying in MLS with his current employers still on the cards.
However, the news would seemingly rule out any return to Anfield in the near future.
Even though Jurgen Klopp has continued to speak positively about Gerrard, there is virtually zero chance of the German handing out a short-term playing contract to the former club captain with Liverpool currently flying high at the top of the Premier League table.
His apparent desire to keep on playing for at least a few more months also reduces the possibility of Gerrard linking up with Klopp and co. on the Liverpool coaching staff during the current campaign.
Having come close on a couple of occasions to lifting the title with Liverpool before leaving for North America, the idea of Gerrard being on the staff were the current squad able to come out on top come May would be a dream come true for the Anfield faithful.
Instead, with Gerrard returning to England at the end of the year to assess his options, they might have to hold off welcoming the club legend back to the fold.
Fortunately, with the former England captain having made clear he'd never play for any other Premier League club besides Liverpool, they can at least rest easy knowing the veteran won't turn up on the opposition when it comes to the league run in.
Speaking recently, Klopp himself left the door wide open for Gerrard to return at some point in the future.
"Steven Gerrard is always so welcome at Liverpool FC," Klopp said last month, via the Mirror.
"You cannot imagine how welcome. So, absolutely no problem. But everything that we have already or will speak to each other stays in this talk.
"That is how I know Stevie and that is how I am. But nobody should worry that we have no space for Steven Gerrard."
