In WWE, you are often judged on the versatility of your character. Can you play a heel, but then suddenly turn into a face? Can you play a face, and then suddenly turn heel?
The likes of Stone Cold Steve Austin, The Rock, Triple H, Edge, and Randy Orton have all been majorly successful in this department over the years, with all of them playing a heel and a face throughout their careers.
Of course, there are exceptions. Just look at John Cena. The man has been face for his entire career, but yet he's still been majorly successful.

One current superstar who has been a heel ever since he arrived two years ago in 2014 is Rusev, but that could be about to change, much to the surprise of the WWE Universe.
The majority of the WWE Universe would probably be surprised to see The Bulgarian Brute portray a face gimmick on TV, but that is something the company are seriously considering.
Rusev has been the foreign heel for two years - a gimmick he has played brilliantly, but WWE officials believe it's time to freshen things up for him, and that could see him turn face.
According to NoDQ, there are backstage talks of turning Rusev face after his feud with Roman Reigns for the United States Championship has seemingly finished.
Reigns is set to feud with Kevin Owens for the Universal Championship, which leaves Rusev with no meaningful feud.
However, WWE officials want to take his gimmick into a new direction, which could see him turn into a face.
Rusev is scheduled to have a match with Brock Lesnar at a WWE live event in December, so it will be interesting to see how WWE book him from now until then.
