Mesut Ozil has played either with and against most of the world’s best players during his illustrious career.
The 28-year-old spent three years at Real Madrid - where he played alongside a host of superstars including Cristiano Ronaldo, Iker Casillas and Karim Benzema - before joining Arsenal in the summer of 2013.
Ozil was also been part of an history Germany team which won the World Cup in 2014 and currently has 83 international caps to his name.
But who does the world-class attacking midfielder rate as the world’s best defender?
In a wide-ranging interview with Arsenal’s official website, he named one of his former Madrid teammates as the greatest - although perhaps partly because of their friendship.
Ozil: Ramos is the world's best defender
“My best friend is Sergio Ramos,” Ozil revealed. “I still have contact with him. For me, maybe the best defender in the world. Good relationship, good guy, good personality - good singer, he has a nice voice!”
Ramos is one of the best - but *the* best?
Ramos, a fellow World Cup winner, is undoubtedly one of the world’s best centre-backs, despite his hilariously bad disciplinary record.
The 30-year-old has been sent off a staggering 21 times since arriving at the Bernabeu from Sevilla in 2005.
However, Los Blancos continue to play Ramos not only because of his technical qualities, but also his leadership skills.
Since Ramos the Spaniard joined the club 11 years ago, Madrid have won La Liga three times, the Copa del Rey on two occasions, the UEFA Champions League twice, the UEFA Super Cup twice and the FIFA Club World Cup.
Ramos has been vital for Real Madrid recently
And without Ramos, Madrid almost certainly wouldn’t have been won La Decima against Atletico Madrid in 2014.
It was the central defender whose dramatic injury time header forced the game to extra-time.
Real Madrid went on to lift the trophy after winning 4-1 in extra-time. Two years later and they won it again, with the talismanic Ramos once again scoring in the final against the same opponents.
