Something huge happened last night; no, not the fact Donald Trump became President-elect. The Cleveland Cavaliers lost a game.

It's been a long time since the Cavs tasted defeat in a competitive fixture - their previous loss came at the hands of the Golden State Warriors in game four of their NBA finals series on Friday, June 10 - we all know what happened in the following three outings.

The Cavs went 6-0 this season before losing to the Atlanta Hawks at the Q Arena, and a lot has changed in the world since the Wine and Gold last experienced a reverse. Here are the main talking points.

The UK left the EU

Just four days after the Cavaliers wrapped up their comeback against the Warriors, the United Kingdom had a referendum that changed the landscape of the European Union forever.

As it stands, the UK are still full-fledged members of the EU, but the inevitable divorce will be upon us in the future, and it doesn't appear to be pretty.

Kevin Durant becomes a villain

A direct effect of the Cavaliers stunning the NBA world was the creation of the Golden State 'Super Team'. Their start to the new season may not have been as devastating as we expected, but don't be fooled.

Kevin Durant sent the basketball world into a mini-meltdown on July 4 - of all days for the States - as he declared his nine-year relationship with the Oklahoma City Thunder was over and he was joining the team who sent he and Russell Westbrook packing in the Western Conference finals.

Portugal are kings of Europe

The final of a thoroughly underwhelming Euro 2016 tournament - no, not just because England were so poor - pitted the hosts France against Portugal .

In an event befitting a tournament that failed to ever move out of first gear, the Portuguese won 1-0 thanks to an extra-time goal from Premier League flop Eder. The most exciting aspect of the game? Either the moth infestation or Cristiano Ronaldo's touchline antics, hardly a thriller.

Britain's gold rush

Team GB went to Brazil with high expectations following the success in London four years prior, but nobody could've predicted the incredible performances of the athletes as Great Britain recorded its best record haul since 1908.

Adam Peaty started the gold rush in the Men's 100 m breaststroke and, two weeks later, the count was at 27 golds, 23 silvers and 17 bronzes - GB came second to only the USA, beating China and a depleted Russia.

Cubs break the curse

The most famous curse in sporting history was broken as the Cleveland Indians - oh, the irony - let a 3-1 lead slip in the MLB World Series.

The 'Curse of the Billy Goat' was placed on the Chicago Cubs in 1945, but their World Series heartbreak stretched back to 1908. However, an 8-7 win in Cleveland on Wednesday, November 2 crowned the Cubs champions.

President-elect

On June 7, Mr. Trump was selected as the Republican candidate to run in the Presidential Election as he beat Ted Cruz by a landslide in the primary.

A hotly-contested electoral race between the billionaire businessman and Hillary Clinton has ensured with scandal upon scandal threatening to derail his attempt to, as he says, 'Make America Great Again'. But as the final buzzer went in Cleveland last night, the reality was beginning to set in that Trump was likely to win, and, of course, he went on to claim victory.
