Despite once playing for their bitter rivals, former Manchester United striker Diego Forlan believes Liverpool can mount a serious title challenge this season.

He didn’t enjoy a highly successful stint at Old Trafford in his two years at the club, but still managed to enjoy a great record against The Reds, and that was enough for him to get his own chant for his goal-scoring efforts against the Anfield side.

Although it’s still early stages in the season, the Uruguayan is prepared to put the rivalry to one side, and has revealed that the certain factors can contribute to Liverpool doing what Leicester City did last season, and end Liverpool’s lengthy wait to land their first Premier League title.

Speaking to The National, Forlan said: “Liverpool have not won the league since 1990, but after Leicester City won the title last season, I see no reason why another side not used to winning it cannot do the same.

“Liverpool just need to keep going and have luck with injuries.

“Having no European football helps, and their players have gelled together well.”

Forlan went on to explain that despite losing a player with the class of Luis Suarez, the quality of Philippe Coutinho and the stability Jurgen Klopp brings compared to Antonio Conte and Jose Mourinho gives them an advantage this season.

He went on to add: “They do not have a player in the class of Luis Suarez, but Philippe Coutinho is very good.

“Klopp has an advantage over [United boss Jose] Mourinho and [Chelsea manager Antonio] Conte, as he has been at his club for longer.

“His players are confident and have scored more goals than any other team in the Premier League.

“My only concern for them is that they concede too often – letting in more than any other team in the top seven.”

The defensive concerns have been well-documented, but at this stage, Klopp will surely be focusing on continuing to their impressive run and stretch their lead at the top of the table.
