It’s safe to say that while AJ Styles enjoyed a successful stint as a face in the WWE, his current heel run has made him go over a lot more with the WWE Universe.

Fans always knew that The Phenomenal One was going to impress in the WWE, and he’s backed up his talents by capturing the WWE World Championship inside his first year with the company.

HEEL SUCCESS

We can credit his run with The Club as the main reason for his success as perhaps the biggest heel on the roster – despite the raucous cheers he receives on a weekly basis – but Styles has also credited John Cena as a reason why he’s doing so well as a heel.

Speaking to CBS Sports to promote this Sunday’s Survivor Series pay-per-view, Styles revealed that with Cena being such a big part of the company, he was the perfect opponent to go up against.

When asked if he was more comfortable as a heel, he said: “Absolutely. Regardless of whether John Cena gets booed, or whatever it is, he’s still the ultimate babyface.

PERFECT FOR AJ STYLES

“He’s still a huge piece in this giant puzzle that is the WWE. So for me to be the heel against John Cena was perfect for AJ Styles.

“It was perfect for what I needed to do. It was easier because I think everyone that’s been a great babyface, aside from John Cena, has been a heel at one point.

“I think being a better heel, a better bad guy, makes you a better babyface in the long run.”

Feuding with Cena turned out to be the best and most efficient move for Styles.

His heel turn would have felt incomplete if he didn’t take on Cena, and went on to defeat him clean on his way to becoming the WWE Champion against Dean Ambrose at Backlash.

If he turned heel against anybody else on the entire roster, then maybe it wouldn’t have been as memorable as it managed to turn out to be.
