Federico Macheda, with a little help from Sky Sports’ legendary commentator Martin Tyler, is responsible for one of the most memorable moments in recent Premier League history.
The Italian striker famously scored the crucial winning goal, on his Manchester United debut, against Aston Villa in April 2009 to earn his team a precious 3-2 victory.
Tyler’s scream of “Macheda!!!” was replayed over and over again on television over the forthcoming months as United secured another Premier League title.
Macheda also scored on his second appearance for the Red Devils, against Sunderland a week later, but that was about as good as it got for the centre-forward.
He spent the next few seasons making the odd cameo appearance for United while also playing on loan at various clubs including Sampdoria, Queens Park Rangers, VfB Stuttgart, Doncaster Rovers and Birmingham City.
Macheda's sad decline
It was patently clear by this point that, despite the early promise, he ultimately fell short of the level required to play for a club like Man Utd.
Macheda was sold to Cardiff City in the summer of 2014 but struggled to make a significant impact with the Championship club and his contract was subsequently terminated by mutual consent earlier this year.
The former Italy Under-21 international has been without a club ever since.
Bari won't sign Macheda without a trial
Now, according to The Sun, he’s back in Italy attempting to earn himself a contract with Serie B side Bari.
However, it says everything about Macheda’s dramatic decline that the Italian outfit won’t sign him before he completes a trial.
If he fails to impress, his search for a new club will continue.
That winning goal against Villa seven years ago must like a lifetime ago for him.
