It’s a question that has been asked millions of times: ‘Who is the greatest footballer of all time?’
The older generation may say Diego Maradona or Pele, while our generation will probably say Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi.
It’s something that makes football so fascinating; the fact that everyone has a differing opinion on the sport.

While the opinion of ordinary football fans like ourselves isn’t exactly worth much, the opinion of football’s biggest names are certainly worth more.
And that’s exactly what Steven Gerrard offered on BT Sport last night following Barcelona’s 2-0 victory over Celtic.
Messi scored twice as Barcelona eased to another Champions League victory, and the Liverpool legend heaped praise on the Argentine superstar.
“He’s an incredible footballer,” he said.
“I think the best ever. The best there will ever be. It’s just an absolute pleasure to watch him.”
Gerrard is certainly entitled to his opinion.
The midfielder is one of the best players the Premier League has seen, has won the Champions League and has played against both Messi and Ronaldo.
There will, no doubt, be a few Ronaldo fans that disagree with Gerrard’s claims, though.
The Portuguese star looks set to pick up his fourth Ballon d’Or in January after winning both the Champions League and European Championships, drawing him to within one of Messi’s tally.
And, with the new year just around the corner, the two players will begin their quest to win the 2017 Ballon d’Or, with Kaka in 2007 being the last player outside this incredible duo to win the accolade.
But, with Ronaldo turning 32 in February and Messi soon to be entering his thirties, we have to accept that these two aren’t necessarily in the peak of their career.
Try telling that to Messi, though. He’s already scored 18 goals in 15 appearances in all competitions this season, while Ronaldo has bagged 10 in 14.
Some people don’t even believe Messi is currently the best player in the world. However, many will agree that he is “the best there will ever be.”
