Steven Gerrard’s phone has presumably been buzzing non-stop since he announced his retirement from football earlier this week.
The Liverpool legend, 36, has been busy replying to the many tribute posts from his former teammates - and other respected figures in the game including Ronaldinho and Kaka - on Instagram.
Pretty much every one of Gerrard’s former Liverpool teammates has paid a warm tribute to the Whiston-born midfielder on social media - El-Hadji Diouf being the obvious exception - including both Luis Suarez and Fernando Torres.
They’ve all taken time out to pay their own personal tributes to the player, you suspect, they’ll always refer to as ‘skipper’ or ‘captain’.
Emre Can is among the current Liverpool players to say thank you to Gerrard for being so welcoming and helpful when he arrived at Anfield from Bayer Leverkusen in 2014.
Emre Can's tribute post on Instagram
“One of the guys I've always looked up to!” Can wrote. “Thanks for everything you have done for this club and football in general. It is a sad day for all soccer fans around the globe. Captain, I hope to see you soon @Anfield Road again.”
A lovely tribute, we can all agree.
Raheem Sterling cropped out
However, some eagle-eyed Liverpool fans noticed that Can had edited the original image.
He cropped out another former teammate and Liverpool fans found it hilarious.
Here’s the original…
As you can see, Raheem Sterling was cropped out.
Liverpool fans haven't forgiven Sterling for leaving
The 21-year-old controversially left Anfield for Manchester City and still hasn’t been forgiven by the Reds’ faithful.
Can will have been acutely aware of the comments that would have come his way had he kept the original image, so cropping the England international out was a smart idea.
Sterling, meanwhile, has not yet posted a tribute to Gerrard on social media.
Perhaps he sent his old captain a text message instead.
