Just when Liverpool's title charge was beginning to gather some serious momentum, disaster has struck.
Midway through the first half of Saturday's clash with Sunderland, Anfield became eerily quiet after this season's talismanic figure Philippe Coutinho stayed down following a hefty challenge from Ibrahim N'dong.
And once it became clear the Brazilian would no longer be able to continue the worrying sign of a stretcher emerging onto the pitch suggested the knock was far more serious than first thought.
Coutinho, who has been in inspired form so far this term with six goals and six assists in all competitions, was in visible discomfort as he was eventually carried off the pitch wearing a brace around his right ankle.
In a rather uneventful first half at Anfield, Liverpool fans didn't waste any time turning to Twitter to try and find out what the early diagnosis was.
What they saw, however, was not exactly positive.
Still images of the immediate aftermath of the 50-50 challenge quickly went viral on social media and the state of Coutinho's ankle is worrying, to say the least.
Some of the early speculation suggested the damage might be ligament related but once these images emerged there were understandable fears the ankle could have broken.
Along with the form of Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino, Coutinho has been one of the main reasons why the Reds started the season so well.
Injuries to Adam Lallana and Daniel Sturridge has already given Jurgen Klopp a few selection problems of late but Coutinho's absence could be far more long-term.
If his injury proves to be as serious as it looks, Liverpool's title hopes will take a huge dent heading into 2017.
Of course, the club's fans were feeling very low after seeing their star man stretchered off and voiced their concerns on Twitter.
