Heskey strikes late to sink Pompey

Published Add your comment

Emile Heskey's stoppage-time winner gave Wigan a 2-1 victory to shatter Portsmouth and new manager Tony Adams in a frantic finish at rain-drenched Fratton Park.

Wigan went ahead seconds before half time when Egyptian goal-ace Amr Zaki fired his ninth of the season from a penalty after Papa Bouba Diop brought down Titus Bramble.

Peter Crouch (twice), Diop and Glen Johnson all hit the woodwork for Pompey and Wilson Palacios and Emmerson Boyce both cleared from the line before substitute Niko Kranjcar rammed an 82nd minute equaliser. But Pompey had two major escapes in a mad rush for the winner and paid the final price when Heskey slid in Lee Cattermole's through pass.
