SmackDown Live are doing a mighty fine job of competing alongside Monday Night Raw since the brand split, and they’re managing to do it without John Cena appearing on a weekly basis.
Recently, Cena has appeared more on Total Bellas than he has on WWE programming, but it doesn’t feel like his presence is missing because of the great work guys like Dean Ambrose and AJ Styles are doing.
He’s currently filming the second season of FOX’s American Grit, and as of this writing, he is scheduled to return to the WWE at the end of December and is also slated to return to SmackDown events through January.

However, it looks like that could change again relatively soon.
Variety is reporting that Cena will play one of the leads in Kay Cannon’s directorial debut, The Pact.
As quoted by Wrestling Inc, “Leslie Mann and Ike Barinholtz have also been cast for the movie, which is about three parents, who upon discovering that their daughters have made a pact to lose their virginities on prom night, go out and try to stop them before it’s too late.”
Cena is usually recognised for his action movies, but most recently, he’s tried his luck – with great success – in comedic roles such as “Trainwreck” and “Sisters.”
With some big names involved with the project, such as Seth Rogen, it’s obviously a massive opportunity for Cena as he continues to pursue projects outside of the WWE, something the fans have certainly picked up on.
This puts plenty of rumours into question.
First, there was speculation that Cena is a favourite to win the Royal Rumble, but if he’s going to be missing more time, it doesn’t seem like the WWE will be willing to make him win and give him a prominent match at WrestleMania if he’s not around.
At the same time, they probably don’t want Cena to miss back-to-back WrestleMania’s, despite appearing alongside The Rock earlier this year.
There are also rumours that Cena is unhappy with Vince McMahon over the handling of Goldberg, so there could be question as to whether that played a part in him taking up another project.
The popular opinion from WWE fans, though, is that him taking another hiatus means he’s doing exactly what The Rock did, and criticised him for it.
Regardless of what he chooses to do outside of the organisation, there’s no denying that he adds star value in whichever feud he’s involved in.
