Within seconds of challenging Conor McGregor to a fight back in October, Olivier Giroud instantly regretted it.

"I've never been in a cage to fight in UFC but it would be nice to try, so McGregor, whenever you want... OK, I'm dead!" the Arsenal forward responded after being asked how long he would survive in a bout with the UFC Lightweight champion.

Fortunately for Giroud, he never did hear back from McGregor but it was still the talk of the Arsenal dressing room at the time.

And as Hector Bellerin confirmed, Giroud did not receive much backing from his teammates.

In an interview with The Mirror, Bellerin was asked to predict the outcome of Giroud vs McGregor and was in no doubt over the victor.

“Definitely not Oli!” he said.

"Oli is strong. He is one of the strongest in the team. But you can’t do anything against McGregor.”

Bellerin's got a point. The Irish fighter has lost just one of his last 18 fights - the defeat coming earlier this year to Nate Diaz.

However, McGregor quickly rectified that by beating Diaz via a majority decision in a rematch just a few months later.

Arsenal's Spanish full-back thinks Giroud does have something over the UFC star, though - fashion.

When asked who would win in a fashion contest, Bellerin responded: "I’ll back my boy Oli on that one!"

Back to matters on the pitch and it has been a frustrating start to the season for Giroud.

The Frenchman has dropped well behind Alexis Sanchez in Arsene Wenger's striking pecking order and as a result, has been forced to settle for cameo appearances off the bench of late.

But - perhaps in an effort to prove his battling credentials to McGregor - Giroud has scored five goals in his last six matches and some now believe he is worthy of a starting berth.

Heading into the busy festive season, Wenger will need all hands on deck to keep Arsenal in with a chance of winning the title.

After 13 games, the Gunners are in their all-too-familiar fourth position but sit just three points behind leaders Chelsea, so are still well set to mount a serious challenge this term.
