When Sadio Mane arrived at Liverpool from Southampton this summer, some fans were concerned with the £34 million the club spent on him.
However, those fears were soon eased after he made a terrific start to life at Anfield. A magnificent solo goal on the opening weekend of the season against Arsenal was followed up by goals against Leicester, Hull, West Brom and a brace against Watford.
However, in recent weeks, the Senegal international has struggled for form - and it’s come at the worst possible time.
Philippe Coutinho has just been ruled out for up to six weeks and Jurgen Klopp will need the likes of Mane to step up their game.
However, in Liverpool’s first match without their star Brazilian, they already looked as though they were missing his creativity.
Mane was one of three players that had kept their place from the weekend’s 2-0 victory over Sunderland but he failed to impress against Leeds in the EFL quarter-final clash.
In fact, his performance was so underwhelming that plenty of Liverpool fans took to social media to question his current form.
Take a look at the reaction below:
Ahead of the clash with Leeds, Klopp confirmed that Coutinho would be out for around five weeks, which would see him miss the hectic fixture schedule during the festive period.
The Reds are just one point off the top of the league and are facing crunch matches against Everton and Manchester City before the new year.
They will be hoping that they are still in the title race when Coutinho eventually returns to injury. But if they want to continue their impressive start to the campaign, Mane will need to improve his form or else he could find himself out of this Liverpool side.
Liverpool will be without Mane during the majority of January, though, with him set to represent Senegal in the African Cup of Nations.
Liverpool supporters will be hoping he can contribute a lot more in the coming weeks before teaming up with his national side.
