Arsenal may have bigger competitions to concentrate on than the EFL Cup this season but, having reached the quarter-finals, they would have been dreaming of a date at Wembley.
However, those dreams went up in smoke during their first-half against Southampton. Arsene Wenger may have made wholesale changes with one eye on their Premier League fixture against West Ham this weekend, but he would have been expecting a much better showing from his players.
Goals from Jordan Clasie and Ryan Bertrand saw the Saints go in at the break 2-0 up and effectively kill off the Gunners’ hopes of winning the EFL Cup.
Wenger may have made plenty of changes but there was still a lot of experience in the starting line-up. Summer signing Lucas Perez started, with both Aaron Ramsey and Mohamed Elneny lining up in midfield.
But it was the performance of a defender that really angered Gooners. That man was Carl Jenkinson.
Jenkinson turns 25 in February and, at that age, should be a senior member of the Arsenal squad. But he looks unconvincing every time he takes to the field for Arsenal.
Just look at some of the reaction from Arsenal fans following his display against the Saints:
Jenkinson was eventually substituted in the 64th minute for 19-year-old Ainsley Maitland-Niles - a substitute that speaks volumes about his performance tonight.
With Bellerin ruled out for a month and Mathieu Debuchy picking up an injury against Bournemouth at the weekend, Jenkinson could have staked a claim for the right-back position with a solid performance.
But all he did was further anger Arsenal fans and prove that he’s really not ready for regular first-team football at the Emirates.
