Ahead of Saturday’s El Clasico, Zinedine Zidane sensibly decided to rest a few key players for their Copa del Rey clash against Cultural Leonesa on Wednesday night.
Madrid won the first-leg 7-1, so Zidane made plenty of changes for the return tie against the third division side at the Bernabeu.
One of those players that was given the nod by Zidane was Martin Odegaard.
The Norwegian is regarded as one of the best young players in world football having signed from Stromsgodset in January 2015. Two years after the high-profile deal, he finally made his first start for the club.
And Odegaard didn’t disappoint during Madrid’s 6-1 victory.
The 17-year-old showed exactly why he’s got such a massive reputation with some incredible footwork and skill during the 90 minutes. He was involved in everything Madrid did and played a role in several goals - although he didn’t score himself.
Check out his individual highlights in the video below:
While Odegaard was magnificent, Enzo Zidane stole the headlines with his debut goal.
Zinedine’s son scored just 18 minutes after being introduced as he attempts to follow in his Father’s footsteps.
After the match, the French manager admitted he was happy for his son in two senses.
"If I take off my hat as a coach then I am happy for him as a father (too)," said Zidane.
"But, in saying that, I watch what he does on the field as a coach and I am happy with how they all played."
Elsewhere, Mariano Diaz scored a hat-trick and there was a goal for out of favour James Rodriguez, while Leonesa also scored an own-goal.
But the glimpse of Odegaard in the first-team certainly got Twitter talking and there was plenty of reaction to his performance:
It’s very doubtful Zidane will reward him with a place in Saturday's clash against Barcelona but it’s reassuring to know that he is progressing immensely at the Bernabeu.
