Manchester United may have scored four goals against West Ham during their EFL quarter-final clash, but the loudest cheer of the night didn’t come after the ball had hit the back of the net.

That’s because, when Bastian Schweinsteiger stepped onto the Old Trafford pitch, the faithful were delighted.

The German midfielder had been banished from first-team training this season and was even left out of the club’s squad photo. However, he has since returned to training and appears to have made Jose Mourinho change his mind about him.

He made the bench for United’s Premier League draw with West Ham last weekend but managed to play a couple of minutes for the Red Devils during their 4-1 victory.

And when he replaced Anthony Martial in the 86th minute, the United crowd gave him a heroes reception. It was an unbelievable moment.

Every one of his touches thereafter was given an almighty cheer - and the roof almost came off Old Trafford when he sent a rasping shot narrowly wide.

Schweinsteiger must have been dreaming of this moment after a nightmare few months and he took to Twitter following his cameo appearance.

He thanked the crowd for the reception they gave him, calling it an ‘amazing’ evening.

His tweet read: “Amazing evening with a perfect result. Thanks for the warm welcome at Old Trafford! @ManUtd”

While Schweinsteiger hailed it ‘perfect’, Mourinho will no doubt echo those thoughts. After their disappointing 1-1 result against the same opponents on Sunday, the Portuguese boss knew he needed a win to lift some of the pressure on him.

In the end, it was a convincing victory for his side thanks to a brace apiece from Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Martial.

As for Schweinsteiger, it still looks unlikely that there will be a future for him at the Theatre of Dreams. With the January transfer window just one month away, he looks set to leave for pastures new.

However, if United fans had anything to do with it, Schweinsteiger would definitely be staying at the club.
