Kinnear asked to explain comment

Newcastle boss Joe Kinnear has been asked to explain his comments after branding Martin Atkinson a "Mickey Mouse" referee.

The Football Association on Tuesday confirmed it has written to the 61-year-old interim manager in the wake of Sunday's 2-1 Barclays Premier League defeat at Fulham.

An FA spokesman said: "The FA have confirmed they have written to Joe Kinnear to ask him to explain his comments about referee Martin Atkinson following the game at Fulham."

Kinnear has a week to respond to the request, after which disciplinary chiefs will decide whether or not a charge will follow.
