Titus Bramble marked his return to Newcastle with a last-gasp equaliser as 10-man Wigan survived a concerted fightback to rescue a 2-2 draw.
The Magpies looked to have escaped when Obafemi Martins put them ahead with three minutes remaining after substitute Michael Owen had cancelled out Ryan Taylor's third-minute opener.
However, the visitors, who had defender Emmerson Boyce sent off for a second bookable offence nine minutes after the break, snatched a point with a minute to go when Bramble headed Daniel de Ridder's corner home.
