Jan Poortvliet hailed his Southampton young guns after causing one of the biggest upsets of the day in the Championship with a deserved 2-1 win at Reading.

The Royals had gone into the game as the only team in the division with an unbeaten home record this season, but two goals from Bradley Wright-Phillips meant Jimmy Kebe's effort for Reading was nothing more than a consolation.

Poortvliet said: "I'm so very proud of what we saw. Reading are a good team, but we deserved to win."

He added: "In the first half particularly we created a lot of chances and this win will create a lot of confidence.

"Last week we played Wolves and I thought we deserved more than we got. It's good that we can now look forward to the next game."
