Caretaker Crewe manager Dario Gradi backed new boss Gudjon Thordarson to stave off relegation from League One after Oldham won 3-0 at Gresty Road.
Second-half goals from Darren Byfield and a brace from Lee Hughes ended Oldham's three-game winless run and left the Railwaymen rooted to the foot of the table.
The defeat ended Crewe's mini-revival under Gradi but the Railwaymen legend thinks Thordarson - who takes over next week - can keep the club up.
Gradi said: "Gudjon is a passionate football guy and a student of the game who I know well from his time at Stoke.
"He has got promotion from the lower leagues before and he will bring his own ideas, personality and will get a grip of this team.
"We thought about a few aspiring coaches but we have got the right man. He wasn't here but if he was he would have seen some promising signs. We played well in the first half but defensive mistakes have cost us."
