Hibernian have vowed to report Colchester United to the Football Association after the Coca-Cola League One club made public their bid for Easter Road skipper Rob Jones.

Hibs on Tuesday night confirmed they had turned down a £100,000 offer for the 29-year-old defender after United posted details of the bid on their official website.

The Clydesdale Bank Premier League club broke their policy of not commenting on transfers to reveal they had immediately rejected the proposal, which was received by fax.

Colchester boss Paul Lambert turned his attentions to Jones after United failed in a bid for his former Wycombe player Mike Williamson, which was similarly announced on their website, www.cu-fc.com.

A statement on www.hibernianfc.co.uk added: "Given the 'confidential' marking of the incoming fax, it was a surprise to learn that Colchester United had subsequently posted a picture of the Hibernian player on its website along with a story stating that a 'six figure' bid had been lodged for the player.

"The story fails to mention that the offer was immediately rejected.

"The story also appeared on the Colchester United website the day after another story about a 'six figure bid' for the centre half of another club was posted on the same website."

The statement added: "Hibernian intends to report the actions of Colchester United to the Football League and to the Football Association."
