Commons strike gives Rams edge

Derby will take a surprise lead to Old Trafford in two weeks' time after Kris Commons' superb goal gave the Rams a 1-0 victory in their Carling Cup semi-final first leg in front of watching new manager Nigel Clough.

Clough, who officially begins his new job on Thursday, would have been delighted with what he saw as the Championship strugglers dominated against the Premier League, European and World Club champions, who struggled to create any clear-cut scoring chances.

Commons sent Pride Park wild after half an hour when he collected a pass 25-yards out and, after taking a touch to get the ball out of his feet, unleashed a thunderous left-foot shot that flew beyond goalkeeper Tomasz Kuszczak's outstretched arms and into the bottom corner.
