Watford manager Brendan Rodgers believes Mike Williamson will provide the stature that has been missing at the heart of the Championship's worst defence.

Rodgers landed the 25-year-old from League Two leaders Wycombe on Monday.

Rodgers said: "We looked at various combinations and I just felt we need that stature in the middle of the defence. He is 6ft 4in and is a number one centre-half."

He added: "In the last few years we've seen players moving up from the lower leagues who are hungry, committed and have the qualities, but just need that opportunity.

"He can attack the ball and is aggressive. He has experience and can come here and develop.

"If you look at our goals against record, we've conceded 50 goals in the league and you've got absolutely no chance of doing anything if you do that."
