Benayoun leaves it late

Yossi Benayoun struck a late winner as Liverpool took a stranglehold on their Champions League last-16 showdown with Real Madrid.

Benayoun headed home Fabio Aurelio's 82nd-minute free-kick to earn a clinical Liverpool victory from their first-leg trip to the Bernabeu and make Rafael Benitez's men firm favourites to make the quarter-finals.

Liverpool also went close through Fernando Torres and Xabi Alonso, who were both denied by fine saves from Iker Casillas, while Madrid's best effort was an Arjen Robben piledriver that Jose Reina tipped over.
