Dimitar Berbatov fired Manchester United seven points clear at the top of the Barclays Premier League table with a 2-1 victory as lowly Newcastle made life difficult for themselves.

The Magpies took a ninth-minute lead when Peter Lovenkrands scored a league goal past Edwin van der Sar, who was beaten for the first time in 1,311 minutes.

However, Wayne Rooney levelled with 20 minutes gone before Berbatov clinched an 11th successive three-point haul 11 minutes after the break.
