Sheffield Wednesday manager Brian Laws was left "furious" and "devastated" after a frantic finale in the 1-1 draw at Preston.

The Wednesday manager claimed referee Andy Penn had shown poor leadership and poor communication with his fourth official after he tried without success to bring on substitute James O'Connor.

Laws said: "My only thoughts are angry thoughts because I'm trying to be as professional as we possibly can and 92 football clubs would have wanted to do what I wanted to do - to slow the game down and put a sub on. The referee totally blanked the fourth official. That's why I am more angry. We tried three times to put a sub on."

He added: "The fourth official buzzed him several times and he totally ignored it. I'm very angry but devastated. The whole ending too was very annoying.

"Preston have got something out of the game they should not have. I was absolutely furious and devastated.

"He asked me to leave the pitch and quite frankly, I don't care, I'm that angry with it.

"I'll be putting in a report. That to me is just poor leadership from him and poor communication with the fourth official."
