The incredible rise of Stephen Curry on NBA 2K games shows his true ability

NBA All-Star Game 2017

The most iconic game in the basketball world today is NBA 2K, which debuted for the Sega Dreamcast in 1999. Every year since then, a version of the game has been released, the latest being NBA 2K17.

Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry was only 11 when the game made its debut, but in the 18 years since, he's made a meteoric rise to the top of the virtual world, thanks to his impressive on-court performances.

As it has become clear that Curry is the best three-point shooter ever to play in the NBA, his 2K ratings have reflected the history he's made. Therefore, it's worth taking a look at how the back-to-back NBA MVP has seen his status in the game rise since his rookie appearance in NBA 2K10.

Humble beginnings

When Curry made his debut in NBA 2K10, no one knew how big a star he'd become in just a few short seasons.

Therefore, he broke into the 2K universe with an overall rating of only 69 - the 38th-best point guard in the game (tied with Kyle Lowry, who has undergone a meteoric rise of his own).

Some notable players rated higher than Curry included Keyon Dooling (70), Rafer Alston (75), Jonny Flynn (74) and Chris Duhon (72).

Fortunately for Curry, he didn't stay at his 69 overall rating for long, making quite a jump by the time 2K11 was released.

Meteoric rise

By the 2K11 version of the game, Curry had already risen to an overall rating of 80, good for the 11th-best mark for a point guard.

However, he was still on par with the likes of Aaron Brooks and Darren Collison, neither of whom ended up having the career Curry has already had in the NBA.

In 2K12, Curry took another leap forward, up to an 81 rating (on par with Jeremy Lin, who was riding the Linsanity wave).

By 2K13, Curry was rated 85 and took his place alongside players more of his caliber - Deron Williams and John Wall also had 85 ratings.

When Curry nailed 272 three-pointers during that NBA season, though, the 2K creators took notice, and by 2K14, he was no longer among the good point guards. Rather, he became an elite player.

An all-around superstar

As Curry continued raining threes (to the tune of 261, 282 and 402 in the next three seasons), he became the best three-point shooter in NBA 2K as well.

In 2K14, Curry was given an overall rating of 90, the third-best rating for a point guard. By 2K15, he was up to 93 - the best point guard in the game.

That would turn out to be a great call by the 2K creators, as Curry went on to win the MVP award that year. As real Steph was busy winning a second MVP award in 2015-16, his rating in the 2K16 version of the game rose to 96, tied with LeBron James for the best overall rating in the entire game.

Curry took a minor step back in the 2K17 version, rated only 94 overall (second to Russell Westbrook among point guards), but if the "struggling" sharpshooter gets hot in the playoffs and guides the Warriors to a second title in three years, he may see his rating rise yet again (especially if he bests LeBron in the process).

NBA 2K18 will make its debut on Sept. 24 of this year, so a lot can change between now and then. Where Curry ends up likely depends on a number of factors - playoff performance and iconic moments chief among them.
