WWE’s website made a brilliant move after AJ Styles was ‘fired’ on SmackDown

One feud, in particular, was turned up a notch on SmackDown LIVE this week after Shane McMahon confirmed he would battle AJ Styles at WrestleMania 33.

Fans knew it was coming based on the rumours that had been floating around for the last few months, but the subtle hints over the past few weeks made it clearer on television that this was going to be a confirmed match.

The big question was how they could turn this underwhelming prospect into something fans would genuinely want to see, and Styles did that on Tuesday night.

The ambush backstage saw The Phenomenal One send the SmackDown commissioner’s head through a car window.

It was unprovoked, unnecessary, but brilliant.

Styles finally snapped after he believed Shane is keeping him out of a title match at the Grandest Stage of Them All, and he paid the price for it when he tried to exit the arena afterwards.

He was stopped by Daniel Bryan and was subsequently fired for his actions.

Obviously, we know he hasn’t really been fired but the company is keeping kayfabe well and truly alive with their latest stunt – as they’ve added AJ Styles to the alumni section on their website.

As you’ll be able to see in the screenshot below, Styles’ profile is alongside the likes of former WWE stars AJ Lee and Adam Rose, and they even went through the effort updating his biography to highlight that he’s no longer a WWE star.

Writing his biography as if he was a past superstar, a section of it read: “Like him or loathe him, you could not argue with success.

“While he boasted that he is both ‘The Face that Runs the Place’ and ‘The Champ that Runs the Camp,’ Styles firmly placed himself at the top of the heap on SmackDown LIVE.

“But that all came crashing down when he threw SmackDown LIVE Commissioner Shane McMahon into a car window on March 14, 2017. As a result of that incident, SmackDown General Manager Daniel Bryan fired Styles and kicked him out of the arena."

The match is obviously going ahead, so Styles is clearly part of the blue brand, until WrestleMania at least.

Last year, rumours suggested Vince McMahon wanted Styles on Monday Night RAW, so perhaps the seeds for that potential move have already been planted this week.
