Peterborough boss Darren Ferguson has backed reserve goalkeeper James McKeown to shine if Joe Lewis is ruled out of Saturday's clash with Oldham.

Lewis has withdrawn from England Under-21 duty with a dead leg and remains a doubt for the game at Boundary Park, so rookie McKeown is on standby to make his first start for Posh.

"James has done very well in the reserves lately. He deserves an opportunity and I have no doubt that he wouldn't let us down," Ferguson told the Evening Telegraph.

"He (Lewis) certainly wouldn't be fit enough to play tonight (Tuesday) so we've pulled him out of the England game. We hope he will be fit, but if not James will play."
