Reading manager Steve Coppell revealed that he left top scorer Kevin Doyle out of the squad to face Coventry at the weekend to give him a rest after a tough week with the Republic of Ireland.

Doyle, who has 18 hit goals for the Royals this season, missed the goalless draw after playing in the 1-1 draw with Italy in midweek.

"Kevin plays that lone role up front for Ireland and he does it as well as anyone - but it takes its toll," said Coppell.

"The manager only gave him 65 minutes in midweek but I'm sure in that time he put in as much effort as most do in 90.

"The Italy game was a massive one emotionally for the Irish boys, they got back at 3am so that's why he was out of our squad."
