Carson still rates World Cup chances

Scott Carson has set his sights on being part of England's 2010 World Cup squad but admits half a dozen goalkeepers are vying with current number one David James for a place in South Africa next summer.

Carson was not named in Fabio Capello's squad for the recent double-header with Slovakia and Ukraine but believes he can re-establish himself.

Carson said: "Mr Capello is going to be looking for 'keepers he can trust if we get to South Africa so I've got to try and make sure that I do a good job here at West Brom. If I do that, it's good for Albion - and hopefully it will give me a chance to get into the squad."

He added: "David James is pretty much set at number one at the moment with England but there are probably half a dozen other 'keepers who could get the other two places in the squad so it's going to be difficult for any of us.

"But, as long as you play every week, you will give yourself a chance. I think I've done okay this season but, the more games you get under your belt, the more consistency I can bring to my game."

Carson is still only 23 despite spells already in his career with Leeds and Liverpool and loan stints at Sheffield Wednesday, Charlton and Aston Villa before his permanent switch to The Hawthorns last summer.

And he is quick to praise the part played in his development by the Baggies goalkeeping coach and former England player Joe Corrigan.

Carson said: "Joe Corrigan is a great coach to be working with. He works you really hard but has always got interesting things to say and different little things to try out.

"He had a great career as a player, he played at the highest level. He has worked with some top goalkeepers since he packed in playing and you can't fail to learn from him."
