Landon Donovan recently joined a group called SoccerCity SD that are hoping to launch a Major League Soccer franchise in San Diego.

The company’s website looks appealing. “San Diego is the premier soccer destination in America,” it reads, as how as plans for a 30,000 seater stadium that will be the steepest in the country.

It continues: “Home to the best fans and ideal weather, San Diego is creating a state of the art stadium and training facility to bring a new MLS team to town and host the largest clubs and international teams in the world.”

SoccerCity SD tried to further its appeal by allowing fans to vote for the team’s name.

It’s a pretty good idea - although it was destined to cause problems. Similar to how Laurent Koscielny was asked: “Who decided that the 'Sonic The Hedgehog' hairstyle was the one for you?” in a Twitter Q&A in 2015.

The front-runner in the online Facebook vote to decide the name of San Diego’s MLS team is, and we’re not kidding, ‘Footy McFooty Face’.

Check it out for yourself. ‘Footy McFooty Face’ leads the way with 1,327 votes, at the time of voting, and ‘San Diego Surf’ (which, let’s face it, is very, very boring) is second with 282 votes.

Imagine hearing a commentator announce that ‘Footy McFooty Face’ will take on LA Galaxy or New York Red Bulls in a match.

Take note

Those who have voted should take note, however. A vote to name a new polar explorer in the UK was called RSS Sir David Attenborough, despite Boaty McBoatface winning the public vote.
