Earlier this week, news emerged that the WWE had asked Shawn Michaels about possibly coming out of retirement for a dream match against AJ Styles at WrestleMania 33.

Instead, WWE fans are now being treated to The Phenomenal One going up against Shane McMahon at The Showcase of the Immortals next weekend, but fans definitely think this isn't the best match they could have been given for Styles.

Still, alongside Shane-O-Mac, he will attempt to steal the show on April 2. One would think though this would have been a much easier task for him to do if he wrestled against Michaels.

Speaking on the Sam Roberts Wrestling Podcast, Michales gave a strong reason why he turned down the match with Styles and decided to stay retired despite the need by the fans for this dream match to happen. HBK said, according to IWNerd: “I know I’m strange about this stuff, I get it.

"People say ‘its a business, it was your job’ and they are right but at the same time for me it's something that I spent 25, almost 30 years painting and I looked at it and went ‘I like it just the way that it is’ and yeah, I could come back and do something and somebody might say: ‘If you would put this over here, I’d pay another million bucks for that’ But I can’t because for me I see it on the wall and it looks beautiful.

"And again, believe me that is so dumb, so silly, I know. But for me that’s the way I look at it and to mess with that is not something that I want to do”

Michaels coming out of retirement for a match against Styles would have gone against the retirement clause The Showstopper had in his Career vs Streak match against The Undertaker at WrestleMania 26.

So, as expected, HBK chose not to do so because he respects what took place between him and The Deadman inside the ring all those years ago. Alongside his thoughts on allowing current superstars to flourish in today's WWE, it's clear to see why he didn't want to come back for one more match.

The WWE universe will still be expecting Michaels to turn up in Orlando next weekend for WrestleMania 33 in some capacity, but they shouldn't be hoping for him to have a match inside of the squared circle once more.
