Arsene Wenger responded to rumours of Alexis Sanchez joining Chelsea in the only way he knew how on Thursday - by claiming Arsenal are the only team in London.

Now we know that's not the case, but in the Frenchman's opinion, Arsenal remain the biggest club in the capital above Chelsea and Tottenham.

"I'd like to stay in the city but with a team that is winning things," Sanchez said, to which Wenger replied: "How do I interpret his comments? In a very positive way.

"There's only one team in London - so he's happy. Alexis is happy here. It's true that we have not extended his contract yet. I hope that he will stay at the club.

"He said he wants to win the championship - that's what everybody wants. I can understand that."

Wenger's bizarre claim has since been a big talking point in the media. With Arsenal currently sixth in the Premier League and behind Chelsea (1st) and Tottenham (2nd), they are by no means the "only" team in London.

In truth, Sanchez can't be blamed if he wants to join Antonio Conte's side, who have been phenomenal this season and look on course to storm to the title.

Arsenal, meanwhile, have been downright terrible since the turn of 2017 and face missing out on Champions League football for the first time since 1994/95.

How the tables have turned. The Gunners once dominated English football; now they're at risk of finishing outside of the top four and 13 years without a Premier League title.

And it gets worse. As a means of rubbing salt in the wounds, former Arsenal centre-back William Gallas has brutally pointed out that they are most definitely not the only team in London.

Speaking to talkSPORT, the Frenchman named Chelsea as London's biggest club and used their recent success to reinforce his claim.

"[The] biggest team in London is Chelsea," Gallas said, per the Mirror. "They are top of the league, won it four times and they've won the Champions League."

Ouch. In comparison, Arsenal have only won the FA Cup twice during the same period.

Chelsea are by far the more successful side in recent times and represent an exciting prospect for Sanchez, yet Wenger doesn't seem bothered by the rumours.

"It is true that before we sold players when we were in positions where we had to sell financially," he added. "That's not the case anymore.

"Sanchez has one-and-a-half years left on his contract. I don’t think it's an immediate concern."
