The bromance between Iker Casillas and Gianluigi Buffon has been one of the best things about football recently.

The two veterans are the finest goalkeepers of their generation, with each bringing untold levels of success to their respective clubs and countries, and the respect they have for each other is through the roof.

Both have a total of 1218 league games between them, and there is more made about their respect and comments toward each other when their respective sides meet in Europe now.

However, despite his enormous admiration for the Italian international, Casillas believes there is another goalkeeper that was more worthy of praise than the Juventus star.

Buffon, at the age of 39, is still going strong in between the sticks for the Old Lady, collecting dive league titles during his spell there, with his eighth likely to arrive this season.

Not only is he still winning trophies, his performances are as good as they've ever been and he's showing no signs of slowing down just yet.

But Casillas has taken issue with Buffon being included in UEFA's team of the year, as he feels that one player in particular was more worthy of inclusion for what he'd achieved.

Over the past few weeks Real Madrid stopper Keylor Navas has been in the press for all the wrong reasons, as a string of blunders have seen him cost his club and country some valuable points.

And considering he's been through the same scrutiny and criticism during his own time at the Bernabeu, Casillas feels the Costa Rican is more worthy than his Italian counterpart.

"With what Keylor did last year, winning the most important competition in Europe at club level - which neither UEFA nor FIFA have recognised - I do not say he is the best, but at least the second," he said during an interview with Marca.

"With all due respect to Gigi [Buffon], it cannot be. Along with [Jan] Oblak, we are talking about two guys who had a spectacular Champions League."

While he has a point – winning the Champions League is an impressive feat no matter who you play for – Navas' overall performances haven't been anything close to those of Oblak or Buffon.

Casillas clearly sympathises with him, and in the goalkeeper's union it's only natural that he'd want to stick up for him.
