After West Ham lost to Hull - to extend their winless run to six matches - the last thing they would have wanted to see was a sensational Dimitri Payet goal on Saturday evening. However, unfortunately for the Hammers, that’s exactly what has happened after Payet scored one of his trademark free-kicks for Marseille against Dijon.Payet’s side were trailing at home against their relegation-threatened opponents before Payet stepped up in the 48th-minute and curled a delightful 30-yard free-kick past the goalkeeper. It’s something we’ve come to expect from the Frenchman and it’s an absolute joy to watch.Take a look:

And this is how Twitter reacted to it:

Payet has proved to be a fantastic signing for Marseille since he arrived from West Ham for £25 million in January.

But, despite being a terrific player for them, West Ham fans probably have every right to be angry with the way Payet left the club.

Slaven Bilic’s side were in danger of being embroiled in a relegation battle when Payet decided he would drop tools and demand to leave the club.

That’s despite saying that he loves the club and wants to stay for a very long time.

But Payet has since defended his actions and believes he didn’t do anything wrong.

Payet on his West Ham departure

"[This move] is what I wanted. It was clear from the start," Payet said, who was forced to pay back his January wages.

"I didn't feel very good over there. I wanted to be part of this project that is just getting started. It came at a time when I missed France.

"It was drawn out because I started my stand-off with West Ham a long time ago. Slaven Bilic had his view. I spoke to him. I don't want to talk about this at the moment, but I don't have to justify my behaviour.

"I needed to come back to France to Marseille - it was a personal choice. I'm very happy. My main motivation is to play football. If I was playing for money, I'd be in another country.
"If [the move] hadn't gone through I would have lived with it. Thanks to all the staff for doing what was needed."

West Ham’s recent results have left them just six points above the relegation zone. As for Payet and Marseille, they missed the chance to make up ground on Lyon in fourth with a disappointing draw.

He's probably not regretting his decision right now.
