Several years ago, Rajon Rondo was considered one of the top point guards in the NBA.

Unfortunately, his career went downhill in the years that followed and he never recaptured the form that made him an elite player in Boston.

Since he left Massachusetts - playing for the Dallas Mavericks, Sacramento Kings and now the Chicago Bulls - it seems he hasn't had any real love for the game and the jersey he's representing.

His rise and fall are best summed up by his rankings in NBA 2K over this period:

NBA 2K9 - 83

In this edition, Rondo was part of the strong 2008-09 Boston Celtics team that also featured the big three of Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen. They were the defending champions heading into this campaign.

Rondo really came to prominence in that championship-winning team and many considered him slightly underrated in 2K9, but that soon changed the following year and it caused quite a stir.

NBA 2K10 - 85

Per The Real 2K Insider, Rondo was ranked third among all point guards and was one of the highly disputed ratings in 2K10. Jameer Nelson and Mo Williams were both named all-stars ahead of Rondo yet they were rated 79 and 77 respectively.

His rating appeared to jump up after an impressive playoff series against the Chicago Bulls in the 08-09 campaign, but many feel his performances in the other rounds shouldn't have been overlooked.

NBA 2K11 - 87

In the following edition, the playmaker's rating improved again as the Celtics were still the team to beat in the east. The four-time All-Star had the highest rating in the Boston team, overtaking KG and Pierce.

In the previous season, he had career-highs in points, assists and steals. He also had another fine playoff run as the men in green bounced LeBron James and Cleveland Cavaliers in the east. In game two of that series, Rondo dished out a career-high 19 assists.

The Celtics advanced to the NBA Finals, but the Lakers gained revenge for their defeat in 2008, despite the fine performances of Rondo throughout the series. His stock was on the rise.

NBA 2K12 - 85

Despite his stellar postseason, Rondo's rating surprisingly slumped in 2K12. He was still a quality point guard and was a star for the Celtics and developing rapidly as the team's best player due to the aging big three.

He was the fifth highest rated point guard after Chris Paul, Russell Westbrook, Derrick Rose and Deron Williams, which is no disgrace.

NBA 2K13 - 90

This is the edition where the mercurial point guard established himself as one of the best players. A rating of 90 was bestowed upon him after he made huge strides in the 2012 postseason for the C's.

Rondo elevated his game to a whole new level after averaging 17.3 points and 11.9 assists in the playoffs and Bleacher Report dedicated a piece to him stating how he deserved his leap to a 90 rating.

The 31-year-old played a significant part for the Celtics as they met LeBron and the Miami Heat in the Eastern Conference finals, ultimately losing in seven games. During that playoff campaign, he hit a number of milestones.

According to Elias Sports Bureau, Rondo became the only player in NBA history with 44 points, 10 assists and 8 rebounds in a playoff game and the only Celtic other than Larry Bird to record a triple-double in a game seven. He was certainly establishing himself as one of the most elite point guards in the league.

NBA 2K14 - 90

By this stage the All-NBA performer even considered himself to be the best point guard in the league and he was rated as the fourth highest player at the one spot in the video game, behind just CP3, Rose and Westbrook.

However, going into the 2013-14 campaign, Rondo was coming off an ACL injury that forced him to miss the final five months of the season. His stock was still high, though.

NBA 2K15 - 87

Coming off the ACL injury, Rondo struggled to really recapture his best form and his rating began to drop because of his health and the year out. He was overtaken by the likes of Damian Lillard, Tony Parker and Stephen Curry.

With talented guards such as Kyrie Irving and John Wall slowly creeping up behind him, Rondo's time among the elite was suddenly coming to an end as the NBA was embarking on its best generation of point guards.

NBA 2K16 - 77

The Celtics saw his demise coming and after trading both Garnett and Pierce, they eventually traded Rondo to the Dallas Mavericks and that stint didn't go well at all for him.

He fell out with head coach Rick Carlisle and became a disruptive influence on the team and was a shadow of the star in Boston. A rating of 77 showed just how much he had fallen.

He was given a suspension for 'conduct detrimental to the team' for one game and he was ruled out for the rest of the campaign after supposedly suffering a 'back' injury. It was clear his time in Dallas would not continue as he entered free agency.

NBA 2K17 - 80

Coming into the current edition of the popular video game franchise, Rondo led the league in assists in his one year with the Sacramento Kings where he signed in free agency.

However, his time in California was also not plain sailing as he had a bad relationship with head coach George Karl and got into disciplinary problems on multiple occasions.

Despite that, he returned to a good level on the court as he was a terrific distributor for the team and orchestrated the offence well. He set a Kings franchise record for triple-doubles in a season.

On 2K17, he represents the Chicago Bulls whom he joined last summer after his indifferent spell in Sacramento. In recent weeks there have been signs of the old Rondo as the Bulls chase a playoff spot.

But if it wasn't for the ACL and his bad attitude, who knows how good he could've become and where he would've ranked amongst the best point guards in NBA history.
