Russell Westbrook put up 40 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists over 36 minutes in a 113-101 loss to the Charlotte Hornets on Sunday.Recording his sixth-straight triple-double, Westbrook now has 40 on the season, trailing Oscar Robertson’s all-time single-season record by just one.Further, the performance improved his season averages to 31.8 points, 10.6 rebounds and 10.4 assists per contest. Therefore, he is a virtual lock to average a season-long triple-double since the Thunder have just six games left in the regular season.Passing the 15,000 career points mark in the well-rounded effort, the Thunder point guard set his name in stone yet again with a couple NBA records.First, he became the first player to ever record multiple six-game triple-double streaks in the same season.

To accomplish that task once is difficult enough, but to manage it twice in one season is astounding and speaks to the dominant nature in which he has played this year.

Additionally, Sunday was Westbrook’s fifth-straight 30-plus point triple-double. No one has ever done that before.

Posting double-figures in points, rebounds and assists as a 6’4” point guard for a string of games in a row is daunting enough, but considering that he’s also the NBA’s leading scorer, it makes his case for being named the league MVP even stronger.

As one of the best on-court leaders in the Association, he has stepped up when his team has needed him to all season long.

That included Sunday, when Westbrook didn’t receive a great deal of help from his teammates. It was especially evident in the third quarter, when he scored 13 of OKC’s 16 total points.

As you can see above, he went 5-for-11 in that quarter, including 3-of-6 from three-point range while his teammates went 1-for-6 for three points with a shockingly-bad seven turnovers.

Westbrook and the Thunder will host the Milwaukee Bucks on Tuesday. In that game, he has a chance to tie Robertson’s record of 41 triple-doubles from back in the 1961-1962 season.

He will then lead OKC on a four-game road trip, taking on the Memphis Grizzlies, Phoenix Suns, Denver Nuggets and Minnesota Timberwolves before hosting the Nuggets in the regular season finale on April 12.

The Thunder are currently 43-33 and are in possession of sixth place in the Western Conference standings, 3.0 games behind the Los Angeles Clippers and 1.5 games ahead of the Memphis Grizzlies.

Down the final stretch, Westbrook will have an opportunity to prove to MVP voters that he’s deserving of the most prestigious individual award at the NBA level.
