Though the Los Angeles Lakers have been awful this season, struggling their way to a 22-55 record thus far, there have been a few bright spots.Second-year point guard D'Angelo Russell, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2015 NBA Draft, has been one of those few positives. He's grown into a useful starter after battling through a frustrating rookie year last season. This year, the former Ohio State Buckeye has started 58 of the 61 games he's appeared in and is averaging 15.7 points, 4.8 assists and 3.5 rebounds a night. However, the 21-year-old budding star knows he still has room for improvement. He said recently that his biggest weakness is his age and maturity:

Being mature enough to recognize that as a potential weakness is a positive for Russell and the Lakers coaching staff, though, as he can now focus on learning the work ethic and on- and off-court behavior that takes players from being merely good to being superstars.

Lakers coach Luke Walton told NBA.com that he's been happy with Russell's growth in his second year in the NBA and has seen signs of the professionalism necessary to become a star:

“I’ve seen more consistency in his professionalism and in his affecting the outcome of games, whether he is struggling or hitting shots, recently,” head coach Luke Walton said. “He had those early turnovers and, before, those games would kind of snowball a little bit and he would struggle the rest of the night.

“He’s done a good job of, whether he’s making bad plays or missing shots, still helping our team be in a position to win games, which is a huge step forward.”

In Sunday's 108-103 win over the Memphis Grizzlies, Russell had a game-high 28 points and also added six rebounds and five assists. He also had five turnovers, but four of those came in the first quarter. He then settled down and only had one turnover the rest of the game.

Thought it's going to be another lost season for Los Angeles, reinforcements will be coming this offseason for Russell and his teammates.

As long as the Lakers get a top-three pick in the 2017 NBA Draft, they'll get to keep it. That would mean they'll have a chance to land a player like Markelle Fultz, Lonzo Ball or Malik Monk to a team that is already loaded with young talent.

The Lakers still have road games against San Antonio and Golden State remaining this season, but the rest of their games are against non-playoff teams (Sacramento, Minnesota and New Orleans). Though Los Angeles will likely do everything it can to lose all five games, Russell could still have some big performances.
