Ever since they first debuted on the main roster, there have been plenty of stories regarding The Shield.

The trio of Seth Rollins, Roman Reigns and Dean Ambrose made an instant impact and freshened things up on the main roster and eventually cemented themselves as one of the greatest factions to ever step foot in the WWE.

THE SHIELD

However, we’ve heard how Vince McMahon originally wanted The Shield to actually come out holding shields - a ridiculous idea.

Ryback has claimed that he came up with their triple powerbomb finishing move but perhaps the biggest story of all came from CM Punk, when he claimed the group was his suggestion.

Following his bitter exit from the company, fans didn’t always believe what Punk had to say, and when he appeared on Colt Cabana’s podcast, he explained it was all his idea.

He said: “So, and this, I don’t know, this will probably blow some people’s minds and then some people will be like ‘oh, you’re full of s**t’ but I don’t f***ing care either way: The Shield was my idea.

“So I took the idea to Hunter, I took it to Vince, they agreed. Vince was immediately like ‘who do you have in mind?’ And I said ‘[Dean] Ambrose, [Seth] Rollins, Chris Hero, or Kassius Ohno.’ Hunter shot down Hero.

“They wanted Roman Reigns. They came to me and they were like ‘what about Leakee?’ I didn’t… it wasn’t my hill to die on. I said ‘sure’ because it made sense to me. Oh, they want their guy in, he’s the pretty guy, but that’s good because this guy can learn from working under me.”

SECURITY

Nobody really touched on the topic after that, but it was finally brought up recently when Chris Jericho sat down with WWE’s handpicked choice for the Shield, The Big Dog.

He confirmed that the idea was for them to be Punk’s security after his match with The Undertaker at WrestleMania 29, and even went on to admit that he wasn’t the original choice – exactly what Punk said.

He told Jericho: “It could be a little off, but apparently I guess [it was] Punk’s idea to have security or whatever.

“And he had a group of guys, I believe were in there, but I wasn’t one of those guys. No, I was picked by Triple H and Vince [McMahon], of course.”

Regardless of all the hate Reigns gets, you can’t argue that Vince and Triple H picking Reigns was a stroke of genius, as it worked out the best way possible.

While The Shield may have still been entertaining, having The Big Show or Kassius Ohno involved certainly wouldn’t have had the same level of impact.
