It never used to be the case, but these days football managers expect their goalkeepers to be quick.

A keeper must be able to rush off his line and, when necessary, come out of his box to clear the danger.

Take a look at the goalkeepers at Europe’s top clubs and most of them are rapid off their lines. Manuel Neuer, in particular, leaps to mind.

Another keeper you might not be aware is lightning quick is Joe Hart.

Pep Guardiola offloaded the England international on his arrival at the Etihad Stadium last summer because, in the revered Catalan coach’s mind, he wasn’t good enough with the ball at his feet.

It certainly wouldn’t have been because he was slow.

When Hart showed off pace nobody knew he possessed

Back in 2008, Hart, 21 at the time, showed off pace nobody knew he had during a Manchester derby.

While City pushed up for a corner in search of a late equaliser, Hart went up to cause confusion inside the United box.

However, Sir Alex Ferguson’s side regained possession and broke at speed. Ryan Giggs opted against shooting from the halfway line and, instead, passed the ball to Wayne Rooney.

Rooney, around 50 yards from goal, got his shot away but was denied by a magnificent Hart save.

The City keeper had somehow recovered to make the save, despite being at the opposite end of the pitch 10 seconds earlier.

Hart's speed rating on FIFA 17 seems low

Interestingly, Hart only has 59 for speed on the latest version of FIFA.

Although he’s a little older now - the Englishman, currently on loan at Torino, turns 30 this month - he’s still no slouch.
