If WrestleMania 33 was the last time that fans will see John Cena for a while, then he at least gave them a memorable moment to tide them over until his inevitable return to the ring. Even though Hollywood calls, most superstars always return.

The Cenation Leader and Nikki Bella emerged victorious from their mixed tag match against The Miz and Maryse at The Ultimate Thrill Ride, which wrapped up their long-bubbling feud on SmackDown programming for the foreseeable future.

Then, he proposed to her in the middle of the ring as the Orlando crowd cheered the entire scene. Maybe not the in-ring fireworks that fans had been hoping for out of a Cena match on the grandest stage of them all, but still memorable.

Now with wedding plans on the horizon, his other half was a guest on the Wrestling Compadres Slamcast. She talked about the long journey to that moment, which includes why WWE officials were initially cold on the idea of letting fans see their real relationship on screen.

She said: “They wouldn’t allow it for so many years. We were told, ‘Not on WWE.’ They could see it on ‘Total Divas,’ ‘Total Bellas,’ but not on WWE. What they realized is that when John was in relationships on-screen, it didn’t do as well when he was just himself.

“So the fan base didn’t take him in like how that was. So after the last on-screen, they were like, no girls with this guy. And I think with a lot of those guys - like, I’don’t think you’ll ever see a girl with Roman (Reigns). There’s just certain people that it’s just, not that it takes away the ‘Superman’ feel of them, but a little bit.”

As Bella pointed out, Mr. Money in the Bank has had multiple on-screen romances and none of them really clicked with viewers. His act has usually translated best to singles matches and one-on-one confrontations in promos.

If Sunday was any indication, the writers' gamble on allowing both performers to be themselves on regular programming has paid off in a huge way. Setting up that moment at Mania resulted in a better than expected match in a very memorable event.

Now, fans will have to wait until the Doctor of Thuganomics gets done with his other side ventures and decides to mix it up on WWE television again. He will be starring in American Grit, alongside other projects, and now he has a wedding to get ready for.

Ultimately though, it will only be a matter of time before you hear those sirens sound as he runs to the stage again.
